I am a graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York City with a BFA in Illustration, and I've been working as a commercial artist for over 25 years.
My career started in college as a comic book letterer for some of the major comic publishers, including DC Comics, Marvel and Heavy Metal Magazine.
Shortly after graduation, I working for an advertising agency, Dancer Fitzgerald & Sample creating storyboards and comprehensive layout presentations for television commercials and print ads.
A few years later, I joined the Marketing and Sales department at Newsweek Magazine, where I created presentation comps for their advertisers. Some of their clients included Absolut, Sears, and General Mills. I also created the finish artwork for one of the Cheerios ad campaigns.
My next major client was Prudential Securities where I designed numerous brochures, prospectuses, and publications, and in-house publications.
As with many of Prudential’s assignments, I was in charged of not only designing but also budgeting the project, hiring additional vendors and following through with the printing, and ensuring that the project was completed on schedule.
One of my favorite projects at Prudential was my redesign of the in-house publication, Pinnicle. It was a one-color monthly publication of approximately 12 pages filled with technical financial information. I decided to make it more exciting to read by adding photos and well designed charts. The change was so well received that at one point, the page count increased to 48 pages.
During the time I was at Newsweek, I occasionally worked on illustrations for TV’s Late Night with David Letterman.
When Conan O’Brien took over the Late Night program, I worked on the show for half-weeks, which later turned to full weeks. I created everything from illustrations to title designs and handheld props. A few years later I started working on graphics for Saturday Night Live in addition to my work on Conan.
Riverside Publishing released a book based on the Late Night comedy bit “In the Year 2000” in which I did the illustrations.
I also started my own publishing company, Totally Graphic, as a way to promote my own projects. “Lace: A Sexy Portfolio” and “Welcome to New York City”, the coloring book guide, were created through it.
At one point while working on Late Night, the writers started to include me in some of the show’s comedy bits.
I eventually developed a fan following as a result of the recurring comedy bit “Pierre Bernard’s Recliner of Rage”. The premise was I’d complain about a trivial problem in my life while sitting comfortably in a recliner.
As a result of the recognition gained from this bit, I have been invited to many comic convention events, was a judge at an Anime award show, starred in a restaurant commercial in Kansas, and I’ve been featured in a variety of magazine and newspaper articles.
In 2004, I was invited to make a guest appearance on the long running sci-fi show Stargate SG1. My first appearance was followed by a special in which I interviewed all the cast members of both Stargate and Stargate Atlantis. A year later, I returned to Stargate to make a second guest appearance.
In 2009, I moved to Los Angeles to continue working with Conan while he hosted The Tonight Show.
